Sheikh Mohammed Launches Dubai Metro Blue Line: A 74m-High Architectural Marvel Set to Transform Urban Mobility

Slated for completion in 2029, the project will expand Dubai’s metro network to 131 km with 78 stations, serviced by 168 trains, further solidifying the city’s position as a global leader in smart urban infrastructure.

An Iconic Landmark Takes Shape

The foundation stone was laid for the Emaar Properties Station, a Platinum-certified architectural masterpiece designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (creators of the Burj Khalifa). Spanning 11,000 m², the station will bridge Dubai Creek via a 1.3-km viaduct and handle 160,000 daily passengers (scaling to 320,000 by 2040). Its fusion of stone, bronze, and glass reflects Dubai’s cultural heritage while prioritizing sustainability and passenger experience.

Key Features & Connectivity

  • 9 Districts Connected: From Bur Dubai/Deira to Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City, with interchanges at Al Rashidiya (Red Line) and Al Jaddaf (Green Line).

  • 10–25-Minute Travel Times: Projected ridership of 200,000 by 2030.

  • Dubai’s First Metro Bridge Over Dubai Creek: A scenic 1.3-km link enhancing north-east connectivity.

  • International City 1 Station: The network’s largest underground interchange (44,000 m², 350,000 passengers/day).

Economic & Environmental Impact

  • AED 2.60 ROI for every dirham invested by 2040 (economic, social, environmental benefits).

  • 20% reduction in road congestion and 25% uplift in nearby land values.

  • Aligns with Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, promoting transit-oriented development and 20-minute city accessibility.

Global Collaboration & Timeline

Awarded to a consortium led by MAPA (Turkey), Limak, and CRRC (China), the AED 20.5 billion contract began construction in April 2025 and targets a September 2029 completion—coinciding with the Metro’s 20th anniversary.

The Future of Mobility

With the existing Metro having served 2.5 billion passengers since 2009, the Blue Line will catalyze growth in areas like Mirdif, Al Warqa, and Ras Al Khor, while integrating e-scooter zones, bike paths, and full accessibility features. As Dubai marches toward its 2040 vision, this project reaffirms its commitment to sustainable, high-density urban living.
